One of the world's most advanced offshore construction vessels, North Sea Giant is the first vessel where batteries are part of the DP3 power management system.
Rebuilt in 2018 with Wärtsilä serving as integrator, the vessel features an innovative, hybrid power system that can be split into three separate systems and incorporates Corvus Energy Orca battery systems of more than 2 MWh for spinning reserve.
Delivering superior redundancy and energy efficiency, battery power allows fewer engines to run during dynamic positioning operations and enables running engines to operate at optimal loads.
The groundbreaking design resulted in significant emissions and fuel savings, with fuel consumption reduced by up to 50%, equivalent to an estimated 2 million liters per year. Less engine runtime also contributes to reduced wear and tear and maintenance costs.
The North Sea Giant is currently chartered for operation through Q1 2027 by Norwegian-based Ocean Installer, a subsidy of Moreld AS.
As the offshore energy industry continues to adopt battery-hybrid solutions, Corvus Energy is proud to support as a leading supplier of marine battery and fuel cell systems, with the most installations worldwide, including nearly 200 offshore related projects.
This groundbreaking project allows the ESS to provide spinning reserve power to all parts of the ship instead of using diesel gensets, contributing to substantial reductions in costs and emissions. The vessel is operated by the shipowner company, North Sea Shipping. Wärtsilä has been overall project responsible as integrator and Corvus Energy has supplied the energy storage.
