The world’s first zero-emission, all-electric tanker, launched in 2022 for Japanese shipping company ASAHI TANKER CO.,LTD
The NK-classed heavy oil bunkering tanker, named Asahi, was the first of two all-electric vessels designed by e5 Lab Inc, a consortium of Japanese shipping and maritime services companies. The second vessel, named Akari, began operations in March 2023.
The sister vessels were built by KOA Industry Co., Ltd. and Imura Shipyard Co., Ltd. in Japan. Integrator Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. selected Corvus Energy battery systems for the vessels’ electric propulsion and power supply systems.
Power from Corvus Orca ESS, the first marine battery system to achieve ClassNK Type Approval and the most installed maritime ESS worldwide, helps the tankers achieve zero-emission operations and increased energy efficiency.
The large-capacity lithium-ion battery systems power every phase of operations, including cargo handling, berthing/unberthing, and navigation.
The tankers deliver outstanding environmental performance and are expected to reduce crewmembers’ workloads by reducing engine maintenance requirements.
Additionally, battery-powered operations reduce noise and vibration, creating a more comfortable work environment for vessel crew and limiting noise pollution within Tokyo Bay, where both vessels operate.
