In 2020, a 10MWh Corvus Energy battery system was delivered for German-based AIDA Cruises, with both ABB and Siemens working to retrofit the ship’s propulsion system to incorporate battery technology.
Charged by the engines, the battery system can provide energy during maneuvers at sea. In addition, the cruise ship is capable of operating for short periods of time using battery power alone.
Fully battery-powered operations produce zero emissions, enabling the vessel to navigate ecologically sensitive areas or to dock or cast off in port emissions-free, reducing emissions impact on the environment and in coastal communities.
AIDA Cruises, a subsidiary of Costa Crociere S.p.A. which is part of Carnival Corporation & plc, has been a trailblazer in sustainability within the cruise sector.
In addition to energy storage, AIDA Cruises’ drive towards emission neutral ship operation incorporates shore power, fuel cells, biofuels and synthetic fuels.
As marine battery, fuel cell and other clean energy technologies continue to advance, more large cruise ships and vessels will be able to reduce their emissions and environmental impact.
