The world’s first LNG dual-fuel e-shuttle tanker with a revolutionary, environmentally friendly design, the Aurora Spirit.
Built by Samsung Heavy Industries in close cooperation with Wärtsilä and delivered to Altera Infrastructure (formerly Teekay Offshore) in 2021, the 130,000dwt tanker features an innovative gas-electric power system that incorporates a battery system from Corvus Energy.
The power system design enables the vessel to achieve significant emissions reductions and fuel savings, including:
47% CO2 reduction
NOx emissions reduced by 80%
SOx emissions reduced by 95%
Annual fuel consumption reduced by 22%
Fueled primarily by LNG and secondarily by a mixture of LNG and recovered VOCs emitted from the tanker’s oil cargos, the vessel’s reuse of VOCs as fuel is an innovative feature that significantly contributes to emissions reduction.
The tanker uses batteries to save fuel, achieve peak load shaving/offset engine loads, and to provide redundant power for blackout prevention.
Unlike a traditional propulsion system where the propeller is controlled by a combustion engine through its shaft directly linked to the propeller, Aurora Spirit’s engines feed the on-board electric grid and excess power is stored in the batteries.
