Intermediate Mechanical Design Engineer

Position Summary

The Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for providing commercially viable design solutions that employ any number of design, analysis, and validation techniques suitable to the variety of possible activities they may work on. This position is on the Modular Battery Equipment Team within the Cell String/Module Group. 

The Corvus Battery Module consists of two primary elements, a “cell string” assembly and an “enclosure” that isolates it from the environment and allows for it to be a stackable element in the Corvus ESS System. Corvus develops cell string designs for prismatic, pouch, and cylindrical cell formats and has taken a modular approach to its enclosure designs so that they can be easily scalable or adapted to cell string designs. The Cell String/Module Group is responsible for: 

  • Modular Architectures: Development of cell string designs that are inherently modular so that they can be adapted to the rapidly evolving cell technologies of the industry. 
  • Cell Arrangement: Design of cell arrangements to optimize packing densities, bussing arrangements, and voltage/capacity considerations. 
  • Cell Bussing Design: Development of bussing designs responsible for interconnecting the cells. Bussing solutions in both Aluminum and Copper. 
  • Cell Restraints: Design of hardware responsible for holding cells with their cell string assembly. Hardware considers and addresses forces and stresses born by or impressed upon the cell string assembly. 
  • Thermal Management: Design of components and strategies responsible for managing the temperature of the cells. Air and Liquid cooled architectures.  
  • Anti-Propagation Safety: Development of designs and strategies that prevent cell-to-cell propagation of thermal runaway events. 
  • Electrical Safety: Development of designs that ensure high levels of electrical safety through implementation of standardized methodologies and insulation/isolation technologies. 
  • Ingress Protection: Development of enclosure designs and strategies that achieve high IP ratings. 

Main tasks and Responsibilities

  • Ensures requirements of design activities are being meet. 
  • Works along side/under the guidance of Senior Design Engineers 
  • Development of CAD models and documentation for procurement of prototype and production quality parts. 
  • Documentation of design activities and analysis to support validation of engineered solutions. 
  • Interfacing and working with other disciplines such as: Electrical Engineers, Test Engineers, Manufacturing Engineers, Software Engineers, System Engineers, Project Managers, Procurement Specialists, Quality Technicians, External vendors. 

Work experience and Qualifications

  • 5+ years experience 
  • CAD: SolidWorks, FEA: Ansys, PDM/PLM/Vault practices 
  • Experienced/familiar with a variety of manufacturing methods such as: casting, molding, sheet metal, machining, extrusions, weldments, etc. 
  • Experienced/familiar with documentation for volume produced parts. GD&T, Key Characteristics, Drawing Standards, Review and Approval Procedures, ECR/ECO practices.
