New Career Opportunity: Industrial Packaging Designer (Project Specific Contract) [Richmond, BC, Canada]

Summary:

Reporting to the Engineering Project Manager, the Packaging Designer will take the design of a finished product and design a comprehensive packaging solution for the complete set of knocked-down parts. This packaging design will address everything from large pieces that must ship in individual boxes on pallets, all the way to small parts such as loose fasteners.  Deliverables will begin with a high-level conceptual drawing, and conclude with detailed designs of packaging for the whole set of parts, to enable shipment of the product in the most efficient and cost-effective manner.

This position will require a hands-on collaborative person who can independently conceptualize, create, and review packaging design solutions in partnership with stakeholders and members of the product development team.   In this capacity, the candidate will leverage deep knowledge, passion, and practical experience in packaging design, sketching, 3D form development, prototyping, and skillful presentation and communication abilities.

Responsibilities:

  1. Designing industrial packaging (wooden crate, wooden pallet, corrugated box, polybag quality, labelling etc) using Solidworks/PDM and sending out all packaging details to local and overseas suppliers.
  2. Reviewing shipment samples from suppliers to make sure our requirements are followed and met. This includes completing a detailed QC inspections report on measurements, material quality, packaging quality, etc.
  3. Interacting and collaborating with a wide variety of different stakeholders.
  4. Creating all types of labeling (contents, care, polybag, box, crate, DG, etc) and defining related packaging details for vendors.
  5. Ensuring that the packaging design and production conforms to customer expectations and requirements – often with limited visibility into what their needs actually are.
  6. Creating elegant packaging solutions for complex products that change the status quo.
  7. Creating future-proofed packaging solutions that are modular and/or extensible, so they can be used on similar products of different sizes, and as the product design evolves over time.
  8. Driving cross-functional design alignment by holding design reviews, interpreting and negotiating design requests to incorporate into design to be produced

Requirements:

  1. You have at least 2 to 5 years of experience designing complete packaging solutions for complex industrial products with a wide range of sizes and shapes, from concept through to finished drawings and prototype evaluation.
  2. You are genuinely passionate about packaging design and have a breadth of knowledge on guidelines and standards for this industry.
  3. You are experienced with Solidworks, PDM, Photoshop, Illustrator, and other industry specific software for packaging design and the creation of mechanical drawings.
  4. You are a creative conceptual thinker, and are able to articulate and sell your ideas.
  5. You have extensive knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes common to the consumer packaging industry.
  6. You are comfortable designing under tight / dynamic deadlines.
  7. You have excellent written and spoken English.
  8. You can create digital 3D packaging mock ups and effectively present them for review.
  9. You may have experience with, or exposure to, high-volume industrial manufacturing.
